Before I started this project—bringing the essence of ancient Japanese rituals to the world as art—I was planning a story about a princess in the Heian period. Suddenly, this vivid image of bright red Kirishima azaleas flashed in my mind. Actually, I first saw a photo of these flowers at Nagaoka Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto about a year ago. Even though I was born and raised in Kyoto, I had no clue such a stunning place existed. My jaw literally dropped. The path lined with those red azaleas looked like a massive red tidal wave crashing in. It was pure energy. That image was etched into my brain, no cap.
